A Grammar of Italian Sign Language (LIS)

3.3.1.1. Position(s) within the matrix clause

In LIS, subject clauses can be extraposed namely they can appear at the end of the sentence, as shown by the following examples.

 

 

 

                          bl-f

         a.            seem gianni arrive

         ‘It seems that Gianni has arrived.’

 

 

 

                                           bl-f

         b.            be_astonishing gianni ix work resign

         ‘It is surprising that Gianni has resigned.’

 

 

 

         c.            strange gianni arrive

         ‘It is strange that Gianni has arrived.’

 

 

 

         d.            obligation gianni arrive

         ‘It is compulsory for Gianni to come.’

 

There does not seem to be a clear preference for the initial or final position, and no pronominal index is required if the subject clause is extraposed.
