A Grammar of Italian Sign Language (LIS)

1.3.1.3. Suggestions/advice

Suggestions and advice also fall into the wider category of imperatives whose main goal is to advise the addressee on what is best for him/her to do in order to get a better result or to improve his/her situation. A suggestion/advice is illustrated below. In the video, the signer is inviting the addressee to buy powder milk. The video contains an imperative sentence (โ€˜buy the powder milkโ€™) followed by a declarative sentence (โ€˜it is convenientโ€™).

                                       hn

                                                      fe

milk ix powder buy palm_up. convenient

โ€˜Buy the powder milk! It is convenient.โ€™

In this sentence, palm_up agrees with the object. As for non-manual markers, suggestions are produced with furrowed brows (fe), plus a head nod.
