A Grammar of Turkish Sign Language (TİD)

2.2.1.3. Strategies of pronoun copying for subject and object

TİD has pronoun copying. In declarative sentences the pronoun that is copied is that of the subject. The copy of the subject pronoun occurs after the verb in the final position in the sentence.  In the example below both the subject pronoun, ix2, and its copy have the 1-Handshape.

ix2 television sell^not ix2

‘You did not sell TV.’

However, the copy can differ from the subject pronoun in hand configuration. In the examples below, while the subject pronoun has the 1-Handshape, its copy has the Flat-Handshape.

ix(b)2 ix3 present buy ix(x)2

‘You buy him/her a present.’

ix(b)cargo send^not ix(x)2

‘You  don’t send him/her cargo.’

Pronoun copying is optional.

ix(b)2 friendb  pencil 2giveb

‘You are giving a pencil to your friend.’
