3.4.2. Presence or absence of a relativization sign
Relative clauses in DGS are introduced by a relative pronoun. Like personal pronouns [Lexicon 3.7] in DGS, the relative pronoun agrees with the location in the signing space the head noun has been linked to (i.e. the so-called referential locus). This locus can either be introduced by the overt pointing sign ix or by a default rule [Pragmatics 8.1.1]. In the example above, the head noun is linked to a referential locus on the horizontal plane of the signing space (i.e. ‘3’). Consequently, the relative pronoun is directed towards the same locus, i.e. ix(H)3.
